Abstract

Clear communication between researchers and research administrators fosters a partnership between the two groups that can help minimize problems in the proposal submission and postaward process. Orientation programs are one tool that establishes early communication and creates a positive working relationship. At Texas A&M University, orientations help to facilitate proactive and cooperative project management. This article presents the Texas A&M model and compares it to activities at other colleges and universities. The comparison is based on survey responses from 42 research administrators from colleges and universities, both small and large, throughout the country. Although additional study is warranted, clear trends indicate the widespread use of orientation and outreach programs that emphasize practical issues in research administration.
