Abstract

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) provide a new therapeutic alternative for midlife and older patients suffering from depression. Compared with tricyclic antidepressants, SSRIs have less sedating, anticholinergic or hypotensive effects. They also provide a broader therapeutic window and are relatively safer in overdose cases. However, they count as disadvantages their potential for drug interactions and their high prices.<br />When one of your middle-aged or older patients is clinically depressed, treatment decisions can be difficult.
