Abstract

Western Area Power Administration has utilized an advanced series compensation system (ACS) in the Shiprock-to-Glen Canyon section of its high voltage transmission system. Like other high voltage lines, the link could only run at 75% of its capacity. The ACS, installed at the Kayenta substation in Arizona, increased the line's capacity by 33%, enough energy to cover costs of the upgrade within four years. Similar systems are expected to be applied throughout the world.<br />The world's first advanced series compensator with controllable series impedance as a flexible AC transmission (FACTS) device has been introduced at Western Area Power Administration's Kayenta substation in Arizona, USA.
