Abstract

A survey was conducted to determine the number of hours devoted to work-related activities by Canadian public and private sector employees. The results showed that the average Canadian white-collar employee works approximately 45 hours a week at the office. In addition, several additional hours are spent on job-related activities at home and on non-work days. Since reducing time spent working is usually not a feasible option, employers should consider adopting more flexible work-time and work-location policies to prevent the development of stress-related medical problems.<br />Time spent at work offers an important and concrete measure of one dimension of employment that affects individuals and their families.
