Abstract

Studies on guinea pigs with lung injury reveal that inflammatory cells inhibit increased total gelatinase activity. The matrix metalloproteinases are involved in the alveocapillary barrier lesions. Most of the gelatinases and neutrophils are present as zymogens. Oxidant stress may further enhance the process causing higher free enzymatic activity.
