Calif. regulators, lawmakers confront workplace violence

Abstract

The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued guidelines to help businesses prevent workplace violence and avoid security hazards. The California Legislature has also passed a number of bills which are designed to increase awareness about workplace security and violence. The number of violent incidents at workplaces increased 19.1% between 1992 and 1993 to 230 incidents, which account for 37.4% of workplace fatal injuries. Also, homicides occurring at workplaces increased 22.6% in 1993 to 195, which accounts for 31.7% of total fatal accidents.<br />With violence blamed for more than a third of fatal occupational injuries in California in 1993, the state is moving aggressively against workplace violence on both the legislative and regulatory [...]
