Abstract

Chile has brought the question of joining the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) back onto its international agenda, with finance minister Eduardo Aninat hoping to conclude a deal by Mar, 1995. It is believed that there could be cross-party support in the US for a deal with Chile, but the informal talks which begin in June, 1994, could still be problematic. Possible areas of contention could be the environment, intellectual property rights, labour issues and Chile's surcharges on agricultural imports.
