Abstract: Oxygen concentrations in overlying waters affect nitrification and denitrification, and their regulatory processes in fresh water sediment microcosms. High oxygen concentrations shift nitrification to the lower section of the oxic zone and decrease denitrification due to increased NO(sub 3) diffusion to the denitrifying regions of the anoxic sediment.
