Fightback on full fees

Australian students are protesting against proposals to raise fees which were submitted in Aug 1994. Students admitted after university quotas are filled would have to pay full fees, and other students would face higher fees under the Higher Education Contribution Scheme, if the proposals are accepted. Fees were abolished in 1974, and reintroduced in the mid 1980s, since when they have risen almost tenfold. The Australian Vice Chancellors' Committee is pressing for the right to charge full fees for students admitted above quota levels.
