Presence of different O antigen forms in three isolates of one clone of Escherichia coli

Abstract: Studies of gene sequences of Escherichia coli K-12, ECOR2 and ECOR3 strains using multilocus enzyme electrophoresis and Southern hybridization reveal that the three strains differ in their O antigen serotypes, which are encoded by different rfb regions. Interclonal transfer-induced substitutions result in different rfb gene clusters in the three E. coli isolates. The three strains have nearly identical genotypes.
