Abstract

A study has been conducted to examine itaconate biosynthesis in intact cells of high-yield (RC4-prime) and low-yield (CM85J) strains of the fungus Aspergillus terreus using tracer methods. Both strains showed increased Krebs cycle intermediates during the production of itaconic acid, suggesting that Krebs cycle is involved in itaconate biosynthesis. A metabolic pathway explaining the role of itaconic acid in fungal metabolism is discussed.
