Abstract

A Gallup survey conducted July 4-10, 1995, found that 75% of Canadians beleive that doctors should be able to participate in assisted suicides for patients with life-threatening illnesses that cause great pain. Only 17% oppose physician-assisted suicide. Support falls to 57% for scenarios in which the patient's disease is not known to be fatal. The issue has received wide media attention in Canada due to a senate committee's decision to keep doctor-assisted suicide illegal.
