Abstract

The Bank of Japan has until recently taken very little action to fight against the country's recession. However, officials are now making considerable efforts to revive the economy, and this could prove a vital turning point. It recently reduced its official discount rate in a move designed to encourage lending in the credit market, and has also become engaged in a wider programme of proactive monetary easing.
