Abstract

The history and social context of the ethnic conflict of the German Diaspora in Romania, Hungary and Slovakia are traced. The Germans, a privileged group in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, became ethnic minorities living in East Central Europe following the break up of the empires and the creation of new nation states, Ubermenschen during Nazi rule and finally ended up as refugees.
