Abstract

After the collapse of the communist regime in Poland during the 1980's, Jewish studies have gained acceptability in the nation, which was once home to 3 million Jews. Since the end of World War II, Jewish population of Poland has declined. According to estimates of 1990, there are only 10,000 Jews in the country. Jewish studies are encouraged by the Polish Catholic Church to try to define and preserve Jewish cultural identity at Polish universities.
