Abstract

Intraoperative gene therapy may be possible in the treatment of occlusive vascular diseases by altering vein graft adaptation and preventing autologous vein graft failure. A genetic engineering technique tested in rabbits used antisense oligodeoxynucleotides to block medial smooth muscle cell proliferation. This decreased the grafts' susceptibility to atherosclerosis.
