Abstract

The importance of preserving paper-based artifacts for collection management in academic libraries, despite the availability of microfilm and digitization, is emphasized. It is argued that since textual meaning is an interaction between information and physical form, the idea of reformatting texts to abstract information without loss disregards the significance of the text as a medium.
