Abstract

It is now time to look once again at a number of received assumptions about the nature and character of rural economy and society in the UK. A turning point has how been reached in the history of rural society, and it is vital to look closely at the best public policies for shaping the countryside in the 21st century. It is important that existing cultural perspectives are not allowed to overshadow debate about the future of the countryside.
