Abstract

Current statutory law in the UK dictates that men's public toilets should be double those of women. Medical, sociological, town planning, building and plumbing literature is reviewed to examine this inequality in public toilet provision in terms of the cultural and urological attitudes that tolerate this situation. It is found that the issue of women's toilets is not considered to be the business of the municipal authorities or the medical authorities. In addition, the male-dominated committees responsible for setting provision standards, in general, do not take the issue seriously.
