Abstract
- The move to a market economy in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet republics has encouraged a drop in state support for research. Scientists in these countries are looking for financial support from the West to do serious research because of lack of support in their own countries. Because of widespread layoffs and salary cuts, many research scientists have taken jobs in business and industry.
