Abstract

The Czech and Moravians in Texas comprise one of the many ethnic communities in the US. Their settlements were almost self-sufficient and culturally self-contained, but this trend was reversed after the Second World War when full-scale assimilation began and resulted in a new definition of ethnic identity among the immigrants. Czech became the official ethnic title of the immigrants regardless of their ethnic origin. Most of the immigrants settled in rural areas and took up farming. The switch to English as the dominant language contributed in the preservation of Czech and Moravian dialects which differ from the standard Czech language.<br />Though they have defined their identity in different ways, the Czechs and Moravians of Texas comprise a single ethnic community which up until the end of the Second World War [...]
