Abstract
- A Gallup survey conducted Sept 4-9, 1996, found that 50% of Canadians approve of Prime Minister Jean Chretien's job performance, down 3% from the previous month, but in line with the 51% approval rating he has averaged during 1996. While 19% have no opinion, Chretien's disapproval rating is 30%. While 60% on those surveyed outside of Quebec approve of Chretien, only 25% of Quebecers approve of him. French-speaking Canadians generally do not like Chretien, who rates highly with English speakers. Moreover, Chretien's support largely comes from wealthier and more educated segments of the public.
