Abstract

A Gallup survey conducted Aug 7-13, 1996, found that 53% approve of Prime Minister Jean Chretien's job performance, a slight increase over July and in line with his approval ratings earlier in the year. While 62% of Ontarians support Chretien, only 37% of Quebecers support him. Chretien is the most-admired politician nationally, followed by Jean Charest, Lucien Bouchard, and Preston Manning. Nationally, Chretien, Bouchard, and Charest are viewed as the politicians who best represent Quebecers' interests, although almost 45% of Quebecers say Charest best represents them.
