Abstract

The decadal rainfall over the preceding seven months can help predict Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in the North East Zone of Nigeria through satellite imagery. The NDVI is a tool for monitoring vegetation growth and deciphering changes in vegetation consequent to decadal rainfall data in a particular region. The model for computing NDVI is independent of location and annual rainfall and can be extended to record NDVI data prior to the period of satellite imagery. The model also explains the inter-seasonal and intra-seasonal differentials in NDVI.
