Abstract

Linear-motor drives provide high contouring accuracy at high speed, high acceleration along machine axes and rapid traverse velocity. These motors belong to a class of equipment called high-speed cutting (HSC) machines. HSC machines usually use either sealedd or exposed linear encoders for generating feedback information. In general, exposed linear encoders are recommended for precision machines, measuring systems and semiconductor production equipment while sealed encoders are best suited for metalcutting machines.<br />Linear-motor drives have improved dramatically in recent years and now provide significant benefits over traditional electromechanical systems for certain machining operations.
