Abstract

The effects of hypertonic and isotonic saline solution on atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and the role of ANP on blood pressure and volume control were analyzed in patients with type A and type B multiple system atrophy (MSA). MSA patients with peripheral sympathetic efferent denervation and preserved afferent control of vasopressin exhibited normal ANP-related hemodynamic and osmolar activities. However, MSA patients without sinoaortic afferent control of circulation exhibited impaired ANP activities.
