Ionic blocks

The details of an activity that uses blocks to represent cations and anions are discussed. Reports show that many students experience difficulty in mastering the concept of charge balance in ionic compounds, especially when polyatomic ions are introduced. It is concluded that this activity can be used after the periodic table and elemental properties are discussed.
