Abstract

A Gallup Poll conducted the week of December 3-8, 1996 found that over half of Canadians approve of Prime Minister Jean Chretien. This is slightly down from Nov.'s approval rating of 55%. Significant regional differences remain apparent, with Quebec residents demonstrating the lowest approval rating at 38%. Native language also plays a large part in Chretien's approval rating with up to 58% of English-speaking Canadians approving of him coupled with a lower approval rating of 39% by French-speaking Canadians. Chretien draws major support from the wealthier, better-educated, middle-aged sectors of the population.
