Abstract

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has received broader authority to aid the families of passengers who die in air transportation accidents. Critics say the expanded role, outlined in the Aviation Disaster Family Assistance Act of 1996, is beyond the NTSB's original mission. However, NTSB Chairman James Hall says airline efforts to assist victims' relatives have been insufficient.
