Abstract
- A Gallup survey conducted May 7-12, 1997 found that 44% of Canadians believed unemployment was the most important problem in Canada, similar to 45% who believed unemployment was a primary concern following the previous federal election. Fourteen percent felt government debt was an important issue, followed by national unity at 10%. Prime Minister Jean Chretien was believed by 63% of Canadians to have strong leadership qualities, while Jean Charest received a high rating on leadership issues in Quebec. Former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was considered the most credible defender of Canadian federalism by 41% of Canadians.
