Abstract

The practice of 'poor' cinema is a reaction against major-funded filmmaking. This counter-tradition is the byproduct not only of economic necessity but also of choice. It usually flourishes at a geographical and psychological distance from everything that Hollywood stands for. Landmark low-budget films include 'Wavelength,' 'La Tarea (Homework)', 'Detour,' 'Les Rendez-vous de Paris,' 'El Mariachi,' 'Dark Star' and 'The Little Shop of Horrors.' A chronological history of low-budget filmmaking is presented.
