Abstract

A Gallup survey conducted June 11-16, 1997 found that 42% of Canadian voters would support Prime Minister Jean Chretien's Liberal Party if faced with a new election. This is compared to the 38% who actually voted for the Liberals. While the Liberals received strong support from each region of the country, the lowest percentage of support was 29% in the Prairies and the highest was 55% in Ontario. The Liberals did not enjoy a significant post-election increase in overall support.
