Abstract

An analysis of glycerol was conducted to determine its role in the eliciting of energy taxis of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. The study utilized both spatial and temporal behavioral assays to demonstrate that glycerol is an attractant for both E. coli and S. typhimurium. Results suggests that methylation of a chemotaxis receptor is needed for positive glycerol chemotaxis in E. coli or S. typhimurium.
