Abstract: Ultrafast ultraviolet (UV)-vis/infrared (IR) spectroscopies are used for studied the photochemistry of a vinyl diazo ester PhCH[double bond]CHC[N.sub.2]C[O.sub.2]C[H.sub.3] in solution. Vinyl singlet carbene has undergone an intramolecular cyclopropenation reaction to produce the cyclopropene product and has undergone intersystem crossing to ground triplet carbene.
