Abstract

Research has determined that plant sterol esters are effective in maintaining healthful cholesterol levels. Studies using margarine containing sitostanol-ester and soybean oil sterol-ester showed that both were equally effective in decreasing low-density lipoprotein and blood total cholesterol levels. Neither of the two esters affected high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.
