Abstract

A Gallup survey performed March 18-24, 1998, revealed that 57% of Canadians believe that youthful criminals should face court trials. This figure is down from 59% from June 1994. Special sentences and provisions are favored by 38%, a 6% rise from June 1994. A 70% majority favor lowering the top age limit for young offenders from 17 to 15, so that 16- and 17-year-olds are tried as adults.
