54% approve of Chretien, Charest draws 47% approval

Abstract

A Gallup survey conducted Dec 8-15, 1997, found that most Canadians favor Prime Minister Jean Chretien over Jean Charest, Canada's Progressive Conservative leader. Of those polled, 54% approve of Chretien, while 47% approve of Charest. Chretien's support is down 3% from last month. Charest's support is up 5% from one year ago, and he holds a positive net approval level in each region.
