Application of ARPS-CMAQ modeling system for urban air pollutant emission abatement

Abstract

A coupled advanced regional prediction system--community multi-scale air quality IARPS-CMAQ) modeling system was applied to develop an abatement strategy for air pollutant emission in the Handan region of the northern China. The system was evaluated by comparing the simulated concentrations of particulate matter less than 10 µm ([PM.sub.10]) with the observed results in the study area during the four representative months in 2005, A process of planning emission abatement was applied by gradually reducing [PM.sub.10] emissions from the original GIS-based emission inventory until a modeling emission scenario was obtained under which the simulated [PM.sub.10] concentrations could satisfy the desired air quality objective. The air quality objective was represented by an air quality guideline satisfaction ratio of 80% to reach a daily [PM.sub.10] concentration of 150 µg/[m.sup.3] after the year 2010. The modeling system and results could provide sound basis for decision makers to develop an effective air quality management strategy. Key words: air quality. Un systeme de modelisation << Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS) >> couple au << Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) >> a ete utilise pour mettre sur pied une strategie de reduction des emissions atmospheriques polluantes dans la region Handan du nord de la Chine. Un processus de planification de la reduction des emissions a ete utilise en reduisant graduellement les emissions de [PM.sub.10] par rapport a l'inventaire original des emissions, base sur le SIG, jusqu'a l'obieniion d'un scenario de modelisation des emissions dans lequel les concentrations de [PM.sub.10] simulees peuvent repondre a l'objectif de qualite de Pair desire. Cet objectif de qualite de Pair etait represente par un taux de respect satisfaisant des lignes directrices de qualite de Pair de 80 %; le but est d'atteindre une concentration quotidienne [PM.sub.10] de 150 µg/[m.sup.3] apres 2010. Le systeme et les resultats de modelisation pourraient servir de base solide aux decideurs pour qu'ils developpent une strategie efficace de gestion de la qualite de Pair.
