Abstract
- Most patients with Parkinson's disease are elderly with coexisting medical conditions as well as the complications of the disease and its treatment. Meticulous preoperative assessment, maintenance of drug therapy up to the time of anaesthesia and afterwards, avoiding known precipitating agents and intraoperative administration of L-DOPA if required, are key factors in the reduction of postoperative morbidity. This brief review focuses on the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, clinical features and anaesthetic management of Parkinson's disease.
