High diversity of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing bacteria in an urban river sediment habitat

Abstract: Extended-spectrum [beta]-lactamse (ESBL)-producing bacteria is isolated from a single sediment sample taken from an urban river in China. A clone library of the [bla.sub.CTX.M] gene is cloned directly from the sediment and the results have shown a diverse community of ESBL-producing bacteria that is present in urban aquatic sediment.
