The Freirian model--a place in health promotion and education

Abstract

When considering a framework to guide health promotion professionals, there are many models and theories to choose from. The purpose of this manuscript is to showcase the Freirian Model, and discuss implications it could have on health promotion. Friere's ideas have been directly linked to the concept of health promotion; health and disease are socially determined, therefore collective action and the full participation of learners is critical. The World Health Organization supports empowerment strategies, and considers them prerequisites for health promotion.
