Abstract

Dell Computer, already hugely successful at direct selling, is emerging as an industry leader in electronic commerce on the Internet. Dell says its 'Web-generated' sales already amount to $10 million a day, although only about 30% of the sales are actually completed using the Internet. The rest typically involve browsing on line but ordering by telephone or fax. Dell is placing heavy emphasis on its Internet strategy. For example, the company's Web site is configured to permit customers to track orders and retrieve service information. Dell's competitors on the Net include Compaq, Gateway and IBM. Gateway and IBM are hosting private areas for large customers on their sites.
