Abstract

The use of stress-balanced coil (SBC) for large-scale superconducting magnetic energy storage has been described. Results indicate that SBC can reduce coil stress to 46.75 of the toroidal magnetic field coil (TFC) and 61.9% of the force-balanced coil (FBC). The stored energy density area covered by the superconducting conductors of SBC is 3.8 times higher than that of TFC and 2.3 times higher than FBC. The maximum magnetic field for a 10 Mwh SMES is 13.0 for TFC, 10.0 T for FBC and 6.6T for SBC.
