Achievement goals in sport: a critique of conceptual and measurement issues

Research in goal orientation and motivation in athletics has been primarily based on an achievement theories that were developed for educational research. This article demonstrates that John Nicholl's academic achievement-goal theory is not generalizable to sports because scholastic success and physical mastery involve very different conceptions of achievement.
