Abstract
- Research in goal orientation and motivation in athletics has been primarily based on an achievement theories that were developed for educational research. This article demonstrates that John Nicholl's academic achievement-goal theory is not generalizable to sports because scholastic success and physical mastery involve very different conceptions of achievement.
