Abstract

Model decapeptides and cross-linking in adhesive quinoproteins have been studied with attention to the chemical effects of oxidation on Mytilus edulis foot protein-1 (mefp1)-derived or -inspired decapeptide sequences in vitro. It seems likely that mefp1 cross-linking has a role in the cohesiveness of byssus, a surface-bonding structure secreted by blue mussels. A byssal precursor is mefp-1. Study of crosslinks of diDOPA in byssus have brought up questions about the relationship they have to mefp1.
