Relationship of race and severity of neonatal illness

Caucasian premature babies are more ill when admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit than African-American premature babies. This is paradoxical because African-American babies have twice the mortality rate of Caucasian babies and African-American women have higher rates of premature birth and low birth weight.
