Abstract

Many theories addressing employee separation issues have not differentiated separation elements, leading to evaluations that have been inaccurate. Current research stipulates that the variable of employee separation should be viewed in a dichotomous or dichotomized framework. For example, separation can be viewed as either avoidable or unavoidable, or as a factor associated with membership in a long- or short-tenure group. Current research also supports the idea that the type of separation criterion specified is connected to the appropriateness of a specific kind of estimator.
