Abstract: Research on methods for preventing HIV transmission from pregnant women to their babies in developing countries focuses on breastfeeding, the potential toxicity of AIDS drugs to the fetus, and the development of drug resistance on the part of the virus. Between 15% and 40% of pregnant women in eastern and southern Africa are HIV-positive.
