Abstract

The benefits of most AIDS drugs in preventing the transmission of HIV from a pregnant woman to her baby probably outweigh any toxic effects on the mother or baby. In developed countries, AIDS drugs have decreased transmission rates to less than 2%. Providing inexpensive AIDS drugs to women in developing countries could prevent 250,000 deaths from childhood AIDS each year.
