Abstract

Date is estimated.<br />The Topographic Map of the Chasses was one of the largest cartographic enterprises of the second half of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century. Begun under Louis XV in 1764, the Topographic Map of Versailles or the Imperial Chasses was the subject of several topographic surveys until 1773. Under the impetus of Choiseul, Jean-Baptiste Berthier and the Geographical Engineers of Le Dépôt de The War continued the company until 1792, when five sheets were made before the Convention removed the credits attributed to engraving. Work resumed in 1801 by order of the First Consul and under the direction of the same Berthier. The series of cards was completed in 1807. In 12 sheets plus a key sheet. "This suite of maps was commissioned by Louis XV to represent his hunting territories around Versailles, and stemmed from his obsession with hunting coupled with a decision to copy an old map of the Duchy of Rambouillet. The maps are the result of three surveys of the land conducted between 1764 and 1773. The first nine maps, including the overview, were completed in the late 18th century under the reign of Louis XVI, but the work was put on hold at the time of the Revolution, when the credits allocated for completing the work were taken away by the National Convention. The last four maps were not completed until 1807, after Napoléon became Emperor. These maps are notable for their precision and the multitude of details represented, including roads, land use features, such as plowing, meadows, vegetable crops, barns, and parks, and hydrography. For his work on these maps, Berthier was granted nobility status." (F.A. Bernett). Relief shown by shading. Shows land cover and hydrography. Sheet name and number in upper margin. Gravé par Bouclet, Doudan, et Tardieu l'aine. Most sheets écrit par Delahaye. Some by Giraldon et Lale, Herault, or Macquet. On sheet 5: Imprime par Sampierdarena, imprimeur de la Guerre.
